Public access internet computers at SJF

[Oct. 2008] We are in the process of revamping our computer access room, building a countertop for the computers.

Free computer access has been is up and running since 2004 at Sir John Franklin Community Centre. We have public access computers provided by Community Connections, a part of the network of public access computers throughout the province.

Our initial installation included three computers, high speed internet, scanner and laser printer. Some of the systems have had their ups and downs, but we hope to add more computers as required, based on usage patterns.

There is no access charge for use of the facility. Members of the community are encouraged to come and make use of the computers for research, resume writing, job searches and recreational pursuits.

This site is part of the larger CAP program whose objective is to make Canada the most connected country in the world.

If your community group is interested in specific uses of this site, or if you have a suggestion of how we might configure the system to better suit the needs of the community, now is the time to contact us with your ideas.

The initial installation comprised three computers offering facilities for

  • web browsing via free, high speed connection
  • word processing (various options including Microsoft Office)
  • laser printing (cost per page)
  • music mixing, authoring (Garageband)
  • digital video editing (iMovie)
  • CD-burning, DVD burning
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system
  • Mac OS X operating system
  • wireless 802.11g access
  • computer lessons are planned (contact office)

We will augment the system to include additional computers and additional resources. When space and demand permits, we willl have six or more computers available at Sir John Franklin!

We have been offered more computers from the Computers for School and Libraries program, and generous eqipment donations which have started to come from Astra Credit Union. We extend our thanks to Astra for their support.

Leading the charge on this project is Brian Hydesmith.
