The Sir John Franklin Explorers have a rich tradition of success in our community. We have numerous championships to our name and more importantly many, many fond memories of youngsters who got their introduction to the sport here.
Hockey News Update
[October 18, 2010] Here is a short point-form update from Lance Barber and the SJF hockey folks for October 2010.
- As of Oct. 19 all traveling and House League teams have their coaches, jerseys and team packages.
- Jersey deposits will be handed in by the end of November. (House League 5/6 are exempt b/c Tim Hortons supplies these jerseys.)
- Teams are giving me their choices for outdoor ice and the dryland room. A schedule will be made soon.
- The Dryland Room is already getting booked. We used a strategy of taking the coaches into the room and doing a demo when they came to pick up their jerseys. It was very effective in getting them to understand its potential for skill development for their players
- House League season will start the weekend of Nov. 6/7
- Traveling season will start about Oct. 29
- AA season started this past weekend
- SJF is proud of the number of male and female players from our catchment that made AAA, AA or high school teams. It is disproportionately large for our number of registrations.
- We always were and continue to be the “Hockey Powerhouse”!

APHA Tryouts
[Sept 24, 2010] Welcome back everyone to another year of hockey and great fun. As each season starts with registration it quickly follows with tryouts. Since the end of the last hockey season the hockey directors from each of the Assiniboine Park Hockey Association (APHA) community clubs have spent many hours reviewing the tryout and evaluation process for the upcoming year.
The tryouts this year may not seem much different on the surface, but the hockey directors feel that they have made improvements to the process so that the tryouts will successfully meet the various needs of the community clubs while following the rules set out by WMHA.
As you prepare your hockey players for another season the hockey directors wish everyone the best and hope you have a positive experience during tryouts.
APHA Female Hockey Tryouts
[Sept 2010] Welcome back everyone to another year of hockey and great fun. As each season starts with registration it quickly follows with tryouts.
The female tryouts and evaluations are run by an independent group, not affiliated with any Community Center or players. This is done to remain as impartial during player evaluation and team formations as possible.
As you prepare your hockey players for another season the hockey directors wish everyone the best and hope you have a positive experience during tryouts.
Team Formation and Amalgamation
[Sept 24, 2010] When you register your son or daughter for hockey you do so as part of the APHA. While you may register at your home community centre, your player could end up playing on a team hosted by another community centre.
After registration, but prior to tryouts, the member community centers of the APHA meet to determine how many teams there will be at each age group. This decision is based on rules set by the Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association (WMHA) and by the number of children registered at each age group across the entire APHA.
WMHA rules now require all players to compete in an Association-wide tryout process at each age group. This means that all players will be pooled together from all community centers to create teams.
During this process it is also decided which community centre will host each team. All community centers want to host teams. The hosting community centre does not have to have the majority of the players on the team.

2009 mid-season report, from your Hockey Convenor
[Feb 27, 2009] Welcome to the half way point of the hockey season. Sir John Franklin is hosting 3 teams in the Winnipeg West League, 1 female team and also hosting 1each of 5/6 and 7/8 house league teams. SJF this fall saw an increase of registrants from last year which is always a good sign.
I would like to take this time to also congratulate the half dozen males who have also made their respective high school teams. In my opinion SJF always has the best hockey players in town.
A special THANK YOU to the Scotia Bank Waterloo Branch for their kind donation of 500 dollars which was split between the Female Bantam A1 and Minor Peewee A2 teams. The money is much appreciated. Also, a big THANK YOU to the volunteers who have stepped up and volunteered their time to be coaches and managers of the SJF teams. To follow are teams throughout the second half of the season and into the playoffs please check out the www.wmha.mb.ca and click on standings.
Finally, a BIG THANK YOU to Phil Samyn and Lance Barber for assisting myself through the registration and tryout process for the first time. Could not have done it without you guys. Good luck teams in the second half.
Ryan Kelly, SJFCC Hockey Director
Glen MacLeod Memorial Tournament
[Nov 14, 2007] The annual Glen MacLeod Memorial Hockey Tournament is held cooperatively with River Heights and Crescentwood Community Centres. We look forward to continued cooperation on this fun event. Get your social tickets early, as they sell out quickly!
This event typically runs in conjunction with the annual winter carnival. The main games and outdoor activities have been played at Sir John Franklin and the social over at Crescentwood. The details emerge on the carnival page.
Too cold today?
[January, 2007] Sometimes hockey is cancelled because of weather or other reasons. We will try to make a note on the calendar or the agenda on the home page. Otherwise, here is the general rule of thumb we use. Take a look at the tremperature listing on the right and use the 5/6 year old TimBits policy on cold weather cancellations, as follows:
Outdoor games and practices will be cancelled if the temperature is -25C or colder or if the temperature when combined with the wind chill factor is -28C. For cancelling practices on account of warm weather or other weather factors, we will make this decision based on ice conditions.
2007/2008 Hockey :
[updated January, 2008] The SJF hockey program for 2007/2008 consists of a house league program for 5-8 year olds and a traveling program for ages 8 thru 17. Both programs are affiliated with the Assiniboine Park Hockey Association.
The tiered program involves tryouts, which are held the latter part of September. The tryouts are conducted by volunteer evaluators with representatives from community centres in the Assiniboine Park Hockey Association.
Further details regarding the overall program are in our “Hockey Handbook” are available at registration
Registration dates

Fees
- House league: 6 yrs and under $210
- 7/8 year olds (born 1998 & 1999) $285
- 8-14 year olds (born 1992 thru 1998) $350
- 15-17 year olds (born 1989-91) $425

www.sjf.ca/hockey
NOTE: First time registrants at SJFCC need to bring a copy of either their child's birth certificate or a copy of their provincial health card.
Body Contact for 11-year-olds
Body contact will start at the 11 year old age group (Minor Peewee).
Age Advancement
If you are considering requesting age advancement for your child, the deadline for these requests is the last day of registration. Make your intentions known to me in writing. You should know that the decision on whether to age advance a player will be based on whether the player to be advanced is so dominant at their age group that the same aged players would benefit from the said playerís advancement. Also it should be noted that the age category the player to be advanced is leaving would not incur a problem with the number of remaining players that put its viability in jeopardy as a result of the advancement. Just because age advancement is requested is no guarantee that it will be approved. These situations occur very rarely.
Hockey Handbook
The Hockey Handbook produced by SJFCC, TCC (Tuxedo Community Club) and RHCC (River Heights Community Club), outlines our hockey programs from start to finish with specific details. The handbook is available at registration.
Hockey Programs:
The hockey programs offered at SJFCC are Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association (WMHA) programs and therefore, are directed by the WMHA board. The male and female programs are designed for kids of all ages and skill levels. The Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association is broken up into area associations and SJFCC participates in the Assiniboine Park Hockey Association (APHA). The APHA is comprised of 7 Community Centers, from east to west, River Heights, Sir John Franklin, Tuxedo, Varsity View, Roblin Park, Westdale and Phoenix.
Children participating in the Novice through Juvenile programs are participating as members of the APHA. As such the team they play for will be determined by the amalgamations for their age group across the APHA. Because of changing demographics there may be a need at any age group to ëbundleí children from across the APHA to ensure there are sufficient players for tryouts and team formation. Therefore the community club that you register at is not necessarily the club that will host your childís team.
The Programs are as follows:
APHA House League - Ages 8 and Under
SJF participates in an area association House League with six other APHA Community Centers. Each of the Community Centers form teams in two categories; 7 and 8 year olds play in one category. Six year olds and under participate in another category. Each Community Center forms as many teams as possible based on their registration numbers. The season consists of 18 to 20 indoor and outdoor games starting in December and winding up in February. The league is designed to focus on skill development and participation, NOT competition. Boys and girls are welcome.
The registration fees include an 8-week Initiation Program for all participants. The indoor Initiation Program will be run over about 8 consecutive weekends prior to the start of the season. The program is instructed by local certified instructors and is geared towards kids of all skill levels. The House League program is a wonderful program for children interested in hockey, so don't hesitate to sign-up and give it a try.
WMHA 'A' Hockey - Ages 8 to 17
SJF Community Center amalgamates with other APHA Centers to form teams in all age and skill categories under the guidelines of the APHA and WMHA. The 3 centers maintain a Hockey Handbook, which is available at the time of registration. The Hockey Handbook explains in detail, responsibilities of convenors, coaches, parents and players. It also describes the unique evaluation process (tryouts) utilized to place each player on teams appropriate to his/her skill level. The 'A' program offers three skill level categories for ages 9 to 17, A1, A2 and A3. The 8 year old program is unique in that it only offers an A1 category. Please review the handbook for specifics on the evaluation process and forward any questions to the SJF Hockey Convenor. The teams are formed at the beginning of October and the season begins early in November. There are 18 regular season games and a double knock out playoff, which will end in mid to late March. Teams play one or two games per week with one or two practices per week. Teams will also typically participate in 2 or more tournaments during the season, depending on the interests of the coaches, players and parents. Travel within the city is required. Boys and Girls are welcome to register and registration fees will vary by age category. Typically parents will be asked for additional team fees once the teams are formed. The fees go towards socks, name-bars, tournaments and extra practices. Please refer to the Hockey Handbook for details regarding team fees and/or consult with the SJF Hockey Convenor.
WMHA Female Hockey - Ages 9 to 18
Female hockey is growing! The team formations and league structure is very similar to the WMHA 'A' Hockey program. Once again SJF amalgamates with other APHA community centers to form teams. Please register your daughter for female hockey on the hockey registration dates. Registration fees vary by age.
APHA Double-A (AA) Rangers - Ages 11 to 17
WMHA offers a 'AA' program, which is a step up from the 'A' program. The APHA form one 'AA' team in each age category from all seven APHA community centers. The 'AA' program still focuses on participation, but is also a highly competitive hockey program. Teams will play more games, practice more and participate in more tournaments. As a result registration and team fees will be higher than the 'A' program. There will be a fee of $50 to $100.00 for tryouts depending on how many on ice tryouts the player attends. Registration fees will be approximately $600.00 and team fees will be approximately another $500.00. Fundraising can offset some team fees.
WMHA Triple-A (AAA) Monarchs - Ages 13 to 17
WMHA 'AAA' hockey is the highest competitive level of hockey offered in Winnipeg for boys aged 13 to 17. There are only 4 teams in the city in each age category and teams may travel to other Manitoba districts to play. Like 'AA', teams will charge for tryouts and fees will be significantly higher. Registration is approximately $1000.00 and each team has an aggressive fundraising program for team expenses.
Ringette - Ages 5 to 18
SJF amalgamates with River Heights to offer Ringette for girls age 5 to 18. Parents must register their daughters at SJFCC during Hockey registration and the registration will be forwarded to River Heights. Registration fees are determined by River Heights Community Center and will vary by age category. The SJFCC participation fee will be charged.
