Details for Micro and House Leagues

Dates, Times:
Call the centre closer to the launch of the season to get details on the dates. Games are typically scheduled to begin at Sir John Franklin Field (House League) and Carpathia School field (Micro League) for a total of 16 games. House League resumes play in September for one month, depending on the weather conditions.

Below are some details from pervious years, which may or may not apply to the 2009 season.

The games will begin at 6:30 pm and will last approximately one hour. The first 15-20 minutes will be used as a warm-up time to play some games and drills with the kids.  The games are designed to introduce elementary skills and concepts to the kids.  After that, we will play a game approximately 45 minutes in length.

Expect a few cancellations due to rain, thunderstorms or the odd Winnipeg spring cold-blast.  Games are cancelled if the field is unsuitable for safe play (wet & spongy), lightning, cold temperatures (below 12C) (Still come out unless you hear otherwise), and consistent rain.  Cancellations will be sent by email and/or telephone at the discretion of the coaches. Please provide and confirm contact details.

Supplies: If you can, please provide your child with a ball. Put your child’s name on it and bring it to each game so that everyone has a ball to practice with during the warm-up games. Smaller kids will appreciate the smaller size soccer balls.

T-shirts will be available on the first day of play. The colour of the shirt will identify the teams. We can't guarantee a good fit for your child, but the kids don't seem to mind if they are oversized. The children should wear shorts or sweat pants, running shoes or cleats and shin pads.

Teams will choose a team name in the first week, so arrive with some suggestions.

There will be no snacks organized this year as most people have just eaten supper and some children may have allergy concerns. Parents may choose to provide something for their own child when not active in play. Please decide amongst your team whether you will bring a drink for your own child or if drinks will be brought by a family on a rotation for every child.

Pictures may be taken by individual parents or a designated parent or other photographer at the end of the season. Sir John Franklin does not ask parents for additional money for trophies or photos.

Technique: Soccer for this age group is constantly evolving. We're changing the way kids learn the sport by trying to give them increased time with the ball. The structure will not always follow standard play, often without a goalie and fewer kids on for shorter rotations. We feel that kids, especially younger ones, have more fun and improve their skills better when they have more time with the ball. To that end, we split the hour into a portion of soccer drills followed by a structure with two teams on the field. We felt this format not only made it more fun and stimulating, but will lead to much better soccer skills and kids wanting to continue on with soccer as they grow up.

Sir John Franklin is happy to include 4-year-olds in our Micro league, something that not all community clubs do. And we're pleased to offer opportunities to older kids through our teams, and transfers when we don't have enough for our own team. (Steps have been put in place to remove the strategic late-registration-then-transfer method used by some in the past.)
